Does Diversity in the neighborhood matter?

Often we don’t think of the dynamic make up of our surroundings, consequently it only tends to matter when we feel uncomfortable. For example, if our neighbors all look the same unconsciously we feel at ease. If the situation changed and the neighborhood however became more diverse what would that mean for the community?  With a different approach I believe and what Sampson believed that with a more diverse neighborhood there are a numerous of good effects that can occur.
In any given situation I believe diversity is a major factor that plays a big role. There are several different outlooks on any given situation and with neighborhood diversity I believe that diversity in a neighborhood could affect each individual in that existing neighborhood in a positive way. I think the effects of neighborhood diversity can trickle down from adults all the way to kids. Moreover, from the collective efficacy side of things to lowering of crime rates. Diversification can change the make-up of the schools the children attend in the neighborhood as well as those that work in the schools that are teaching the children. I also, believe that diversifying a neighborhood can break stigmas of certain neighborhoods.

When it comes to crime in particular in certain areas I believe it is true when it is stated that people are more likely to commit a crime in their own neighborhood versus somewhere else. It’s more common because people are more comfortable in the own neighborhood than anywhere else. If a neighbor moves in with this strong sense of collective efficacy that turns into a neighborhood effect along with some diversity not all crime will stop but, the amount of crime  that we are accustom to shall slowly decrease. Diversity in the neighborhood matters, if all you know is those that look like you and come from the same background as you then you are missing out on something much bigger.

  1. I like the examples you gave in your blog, but it would of been nice if you tied it more to the readings. A lot of your statements started with "I believe", having quotes from the book would of been helpful as they would of helped back up what you "believed" was right or wrong. Other than that, you came up with good points!
